Join us under the stars this summer with William Shakespeare!
For those who miss excellent theater productions, this is for you! San Diego’s professional Old Globe is planning a wonderful pairing of Shakespearean delights this summer in the outdoor theater.
Join Tesla Club members June 21 for Taming of the Shrew and August 30 for A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Two-play packages are $60, $112, $154, $202, and $210.
For other dates and ticket purchase, visit www.theoldglobe.org. The season was just announced, so great seats are still available.
Please let us know if you’re attending June 21 and August 30 so we can meet during the intermission or possibly for carpooling. A caravan is possible if there are requests for it.
These plays start at 8 pm. It will feel warm outside at first, but by intermission you’ll be relieved if you brought a warm jacket or even a lap blanket. Some bring seat cushions as well.
One of the delights that make the outdoor theater in Balboa Park so special is that occasionally you can hear the roar of a lion or call of a peacock nearby at the San Diego Zoo.
Here are the Old Globe’s descriptions:
The Taming of the Shrew
Is anyone a match for the brash and strong-willed Katherine? The dashing adventurer Petruchio thinks he’s up to the challenge. Two of the sexiest figures in all of world theatre set off sparks in a clash of wills that is as bold as it is uproarious. Shakespeare’s masterful comedic take on the battle of the sexes turns everything we think about love, marriage, and gender on its head. Director Shana Cooper brings to the Globe her daring and contemporary staging, which The New York Times praised as “an exhilarating new way to look at the comedy through modern eyes,” and The Wall Street Journal’s theatre critic called “the best Shrew I’ve ever reviewed.”
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Fall under the spell of Shakespeare’s most joyful and popular comedy, directed by Patricia McGregor. Filled with magic, humor, music, and spectacle, the merriment unfolds in an enchanted forest where fairies play tricks on unsuspecting lovers, and bumbling actors are transformed beyond their wildest dreams. With a magic potion that grants love at first sight, anything can and does happen!
